LA PIETÀ
In this provocative series, I reimagine Michelangelo's iconic Pietà through a contemporary and multicultural lens, challenging Western art's historical monopoly on religious iconography. Working in large format (2x2m), these hand-drawn compositions employ pencils, Bic pens, and acrylic colors, merging classical techniques with street art influences. The deliberate choice to represent holy figures as people of various ethnicities transforms the traditional religious narrative into a powerful commentary on contemporary issues of migration, representation, and human dignity.

These four large-scale interpretations of the Pietà maintain the profound emotional core of Michelangelo's composition while introducing contemporary elements and diverse cultural perspectives. Gold backgrounds reference traditional religious art while graffiti-inspired techniques and modern symbols ground the works in present-day reality. The Madonna appears with features inspired by Nigerian masks or Asian characteristics, while Christ is depicted across different ethnicities, including a powerful representation as a migrant lost in the Mediterranean, complete with orange life jacket.
Each composition integrates contemporary elements - branded sneakers, geometric patterns, urban art techniques - with classical rendering. The dripping paint effects and color explosions from street art culture create temporal tensions with the traditional religious imagery. The scale forces an immediate confrontation between viewer and subject, while the technical fusion of classical drawing and modern elements mirrors the conceptual bridging of past and present, sacred and secular, tradition and innovation.
Through this series, I strive to create a meaningful synthesis that speaks to both the universality of human suffering and the urgency of contemporary social justice issues, transforming the Pietà from a purely religious icon into a lens through which to view current humanitarian crises.
